Several studies published over the years
have highlighted a common stand point relating to teen dating i.e. the girls
and gals who start dating early are found to be disrupting the normal mode of
teen age development and also often have proved to encounter more behavioral
and academic shortcomings compared to their senior counterparts.
Generally, interest towards the opposite
sex starts at puberty and slowly evolves into friendly interactions followed by
mid-teens dating. Exclusive relationships are mostly formed later in
adolescence. Now, entering into exclusive relationships at a tender age can
leave the teens ill-prepared to take the pressure of serious relationships.
These factors can easily enhance the chances of alcohol use, unsafe sexual
activity and delinquent behaviors among teens. On the contrary, late- starters
have appeared not to have any such apparent emotional or social difficulties.
A study conducted by a Canada based
University among 700 students from 12 local schools has revealed that early
starters have reported almost twice as many acts of delinquent or abnormal
behavior compared to the late bloomers. Behaviors include truancy, cheating,
running away, disobedience and picking fights. Studies on the late- starters,
on the other hand, clearly highlighted to have taken a much more traditional
path, starting with interest towards the opposite sex, followed by a gradual
accelerated route through casual & group dating stages before upgrading to
intimate relationships, with no such adverse effect. The studies have failed to come up with any
simple way out to this rising adversity among today’s Gen-X teens, proper
parental guidance perhaps being the only viable solution available.
